We are going back to Amphor Omkoi again. This time we will be entering from a different end of the mountains from Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son Province, which is much more convenient to reach the schools than from Amphor Omkoi as usual. The school group that we are reaching out to this time is called “Jue Ta” with a combined 200 beneficiaries.
Why Omkoi Again?
Amphor Omkoi (Omkoi District) is located in the remote area in Chiang Mai Province. There are many small-size schools that are too small to be affiliated with the standard schooling system with over 170 non-formal education schools/centers within 1 district.
Some may question why not combine those many smaller-size centers into fewer bigger ones, so there are more chances to get bigger budgets. Due to the geographic conditions of Omkoi District, transporting small children in and out of the area is extremely difficult. Therefore, those small education centers are vital to provide education for communities in the extreme remote areas.
All the 7 schools that we have selected for this year’s projects are in affiliation with small-size non-formal education centers. 6 of the 7 schools are in the “Jue Ta” group. The one outside “Jue Ta” group is under a severe condition with no electricity, so we decided to reach out urgently.
Many organizations had reached out and helped the schools in the Jue Ta group before, but it had been quite a while ago and the schools haven’t had the funds to conduct maintenance work. For example, a building from 15 years ago or solar panels from 10 years ago that the batteries have already gone bad and the schools don’t have the budget for continuous maintenance. Some schools don’t have the budget allocated for teachers. Teacher’s residences are also in extreme condition where they are ready to collapse at any moment, but are being used daily.
The lack of access to electricity that we see from these 7 schools has been the most severe than other projects that we have done in the previous years. Some schools only have enough electricity to charge the teacher's phone and 3 more lights. The solar equipment received previously had gone unusable. Our team has approved a 531,790 THB budget in advance earlier this year to urgently alleviate the issue, but we are also encountering some difficulty with the installment during the stormy season.
In addition, this year we will be doing a lot of big construction and maintenance work, which requires more funding that previous years. We would be working on the construction of new buildings, new residences for teachers, new bathrooms, and fixing the electrical work for all the schools.
Each year, we try to plan the project in the way that the cost would not exceed the anticipated funding that we can raise. Therefore, we really need your help so that we can improve the quality of the students and the teachers with the basic utilities at the minimum. We hope that this project can resolve the immediate problems, so that the teachers can be at peace for the next 3-5 years and hope for the schools to be able to get additional fundings in the future.
